(more) music, please

crazy hectic week, im basically just gonna write about what ive been listening to.
on my ipod: pretty much on loop this whole week has been interpol's second album, Antics. ive had the album for a really long time and for some reason just never listened to it, but its fantastic, go pick it up or find it online to listen to. also some get him, eat him. i have two of their albums and again i didnt like them at all when i first listened to them, but theyre growing on me, especially their song "mumble, mumble"
live and online: the N result- theyre not well known at all and are actually playing at rutgersfest this coming week. i caught their performance at rutgers day and it was awesome. the guys in this band are so nice, seriously some of the most laid back and genuine people ever. they sound like a mix of maroon 5 and linkin park. they do sick covers and theyre original stuff is also really good, especially the song "hollywood" last, but certainly not least reality addiction they play an awesome live show and have the nicest guys in their band. their lyrics are outstanding and extremely catchy. you can check them out at bamboozle this coming weekend.

expect better things from me in the coming weeks when i have more time.

music, please

so lately I've been debating with some friends about music, specifically sampling in music. This issue came up when discussing Asher Roth's single "I love College" The beat of this song is the same as Weezer's "Say it ain't so". Actually if you want to get technical, they don't have exactly the same beat, but that's not the point. the beat IS very similar. i personally don't see the problem, but a friend of mine claimed that "it's unoriginal ." ok, but what's your point? first off, its a song and if you can't sit back and enjoy it then don't listen to it. secondly, if you're going to throw out song's like this then you need to throw out the baby with the bathwater and not listen to any song that samples. this includes most of industrial rock that frequently uses samples from movies or from political speeches. you would also be throwing away a lot of hip hop. artists from the beastie boys to flo rida are known for their use of samples. in addition to music you would have to throw out a lot of really amazing paintings and sculptures because they "sample" elements from other artists or the world around us. what all of these artists are doing is taking something that you know and have known and making you rethink it. this concept is applied in art in many modern art movements and with the use of the ready-made, or a found object integrated into the piece. one of the most famous examples of this is duchamp's the fountain. whether or not you personally consider this art, it is art because duchamp said it was and is therefore legitamate. duchamp took something that you see in your everyday life and challenged your concepts of it. basically saying, "no, this is not a urinal this is a fountain." interestingly enough titling it for the very opposite of its purpose as a fountain give off liquid and (without getting graphic) you put liquid into a urinal. it is my belief that artists like asher roth are merely doing the same. he took the beat to a song about heart break that is a cliche college "bro" song and made about being a bro in college. genius. i think the song is infecteous and captures what its like to be in college. his rhymes are well crafted and its overall an enjoyable song. this kid's got skills, watch out for him. im leaving you with another song of his "Lark on my go kart" the video awesomely spoofs save by the bell and a bunch of other things and yet again features some awesome lyrics. enjoy.

first blog.

k, well, I'm not sure what I'm gonna write here. I'm thinking its just gonna be my thoughts. i know that's what all blogs are, but i don't think i have enough to say about any one topic to write a blog about one topic. so i guess ill explain the name of the blog. it's the title of a poem i wrote this year for a creative writing class. i really liked the poem, but my CW professor thought it was too cliche. ill post it at some point.
anyway, I'm gonna start writing about what goes on in my life. being as I'm home and didn't feel like looking for plans, i stayed in and watched Milk with my parents. it's odd because if i wa
s at Rutgers, i wouldn't have had to look for plans, but because I'm home i did. i dunno what it is but for some reason i don't mind hanging around as much when I'm at home. at school, i need to go out, like smokers need cigarettes. without it i feel like i might go insane or something, but i digress. Milk was fantastic. Sean Penn definitely deserved an Oscar for his performance; he rocked. actually, everyone in it was awesome. i had heard a lot about Sean Penn's brilliant performance, but i think the supporting cast was really under-rated. Emile Hirsch and James Franco should've won something also (I'm not sure if they were even nominated, but shwhatever, not the point).
just go see it, trust me.
